Franklin Graves is an experienced in-house counsel and is currently a member of the technology law group at HCA Healthcare, Inc. He is an Affiliated Faculty with Emerson College’s Business of Creative Enterprises MA program where he teaches business and IP law. He previously held roles on the commercial legal team at Eventbrite, Inc. and the business and legal affairs team at Naxos Music Group. Franklin also runs the weekly newsletter, Creator Economy Law, on LinkedIn. He is based in Nashville, TN Profession: Franklin is currently Co-Chair of the Copyright and Emerging Technology Committee of the ABA's Section of Intellectual Property Law. In this role, he has held monthly meetings with a robust roster of speakers, ranging from Meta and Getty Images to space lawyers and computational privacy researchers. He is also a member of the Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML) Task Force formed in early 2023. As part of Franklin's decade-long commitment to the ABA, he has served in leadership roles, was selected as a Young Lawyer Fellow (a competitive three-year leadership development program for IP professionals), and was appointed as a Young Lawyer Council Member. Franklin has been a two-time winner of the Section's "Outstanding Leadership Contribution Award," recognizing an outstanding contribution of leadership. Practice: Franklin is currently Technology Counsel at HCA Healthcare, Inc., where he provides guidance and strategic counsel for corporate technology initiatives. As a member of the Technology Law Group, a group of eight attorneys within the larger HCA Healthcare legal team, Franklin ensures corporate technology agreements with vendors, customers, and service providers have received appropriate reviews and are consistent with the company's technology legal practice and policy. Additionally, he serves as a subject matter expert for intellectual property and media, data, privacy, and security laws as they intersect with technology. Pro Bono: Franklin spends time volunteering through the local Nashville Volunteer Lawyers and Professionals for the Arts (VLPA) program, having participated in a number of pro bono legal clinics and taking on individual client cases. He also provides legal education on IP and related rights to internet creators. Additionally, Franklin mentors and provide career and professional guidance to law students and young lawyers as they navigate law school and the legal profession.
