James leads on Responsible Data and AI for the BBC, ensuring that the BBC’s use of data and AI align with their values, priorities and legal and regulatory obligations. He is responsible for overall governance of internal development, use, and procurement of AI, and for turning principles into practice by providing teams with tools and support, and building capacity and culture throughout the BBC. Previously he worked in the BBC’s conversational AI team, after many years travelling the world as a radio reporter and producer.
The BBC has developed AI principles and a risk management framework to guide the corporation’s approach to the rapidly changing AI landscape. But turning key principles into practice means diving into the challenging world of evaluating the technical performance of AI. In this talk James and Oli will share the BBC’s emerging approach to AI evaluation, with practical examples of testing AI services and measuring public service values like representation and universality in personalised platforms such as iPlayer.
